The Other Place Bar 2020 Sand Volleyball League Rules

Playing Rules:

Start of game:

  • Odds/Evens will determine serve or side. Teams will rotate sides after completion of each match.
  • $9 for ref fee per team
  • Six players maximum and four players minimum on the court to play.
  • Coed teams must play with equal number of men and women or more women than men.
  • Teams are not allowed to pick up non-rostered players unless approved by the opposing team. 
  • Players may only rotate in or substitute in for a player of the same gender and only when play is dead. 
  • If a team is short players at the scheduled game time a five minute grace period is allowed, if still short, the first match is forfeited; if still short after ten minutes, all three matches will be forfeited.
  • Teams with 3 forfeits during the regular season are not eligible for playoffs

Serving:

  • Recreational league must serve underhand. Wednesday league has the option of overhand or underhand.
  • Do not serve until the ref has blown the whistle
  • If the ball touches a net on a serve, but goes into the opponent’s side of the court it is considered a live ball.
  • When you are serving, you may not touch the end line.

Scoring:

  • All games are rally scoring. Each match will be played to 25 with a point cap of 27. Must win by 2
  • Three matches will be played each night with a 55-minute time limit
  • The 3rd match will be played to 15 if there is a time constraint
  • One point will be awarded for each match won
  • Standing are determined by the total number of matches won

Team Hits:

  • The ball may be played by any part of the body, including the feet
  • A block is not considered a hit so you may hit it again after the ball has been blocked
  • A player may not hit the ball twice in succession except if the first touch was a block
  • The ball may not be hit by three consecutive male players before being returned
  • If two or more players contact the ball at the same time it is considered one hit and the players involved may not participate in the next hit.
  • The ball may be hit a maximum of 3 times on each side. When using 3 hits to return the ball, it MUST be played at least once by a female player.

Faults:

  • Do not serve until the ref has blown the whistle
  • During play, only the captain of the team shall be allowed to consult with the ref for a rule interpretation or call
  • Lifts: No prolonged contact between the player and the ball. The contact should continue in one fluid motion and the ball should not come to rest at any time in that motion
  • Attacking the Ball on a Serve: That means no blocking or spiking the return on first contact. If you are in the back row you may jump when returning the serve if you are more than ten foot from the net but you still cannot spike the ball
  • The ball is considered “In” when it touches the sand of the playing court or the boundary line.
  • No contact with the net is allowed by any portion of the body/clothing ever
  • Under the Net: A player may go completely under the net as long as they neither touch the net or interfere with the play or players from the opposing team
  • Over the Net: A player may not reach over the net into the opponents’ playing space except under the following conditions:
    • The player has just hit the ball from their own side and their follow through placed their arm into the opponents playing space
    • They are blocking a ball that is clearly being advanced to your side of the court
    • The opposing team has used all three of their hits

Miscellaneous:

  • One 30 second time-out will be allowed per team per game.
  • Games will be played in most types of weather, unless lightning is present. Please show up for your scheduled match each week unless otherwise notified.
  • The Other Place bar is not responsible for lost or stolen valuables. Any items found should be turned into the bartender. Individuals who have lost an item should inquire at the bar. 

Etiquette/Conduct:

  1. Please keep profanity to a limit
  2. No Children allowed on courts during games
  3. No Smoking allowed on the courts at any time
  4. No Glass on the deck or courts

Insurance

Be aware that there are inherent risks to playing the game of volleyball. Injuries may occur due to collisions with other players, running into poles, etc. The Other Place bar does not provide insurance for the participants of our leagues. Each player, as a result of participation in the leagues, assumes all liability and risk of injury. It is strongly suggested that each player obtain medical and liability insurance prior to participating in the leagues.
